Get Ready To Winterize Your Home

Image
Be Proactive about winterizing your plumbing! Make sure that your plumbing isn’t vulnerable to the cycles of freezing and thawing that can cause pipes to burst -- a disaster that can result in water damage or the growth of mold. To weatherproof your plumbing, shut off the supply of water to outdoor spigots, swamp coolers, and sprinkler systems, then drain them. (Depending on your irrigation system, you may also need a contractor to blow out any excess moisture with compressed air.) Also cover the outdoor components of your air conditioner or swamp cooler to protect them from the elements. Seal leaks and save money. Check your roof for loose or missing shingles and gaps around your chimney, flues, and other openings and do the same for your home’s exterior. Be especially watchful of the areas around windows, doors, and your foundation. Once you identify areas where water might intrude or ice could form, address these problems. Caulk cracks or install weather stripping where appropr...

How to Take the Chill Out!

What should you do if a water pipe freezes? You should make sure it never happens again! When the water freezes, it tries to expand inside the pipe. It pushes against the sides of the pipe, as well as any nearby valves, seams and faucets. The freezing action of the water is more than capable of rupturing any pipe. Unfortunately, a water pipe may freeze even if you have taken precautions. Perhaps you lost electrical power for several hours, the temperature inside your house fell and the pipes froze. Or maybe you left on vacation, turned down the heat and weren't expecting an early blizzard. Or perhaps your heat tape quit working, and you didn't find out until you discovered none of the faucets worked. Whatever the cause, it's important that you thaw out your pipe for two reasons: 1. You almost certainly need the water. 2. You should be at home when the pipe thaws, just in case the pipe and/or joint is ruptured. Bear in mind that a frozen pipe doesn't leak - the wat...

Plumbing Tips To Help You Sell Your Home

Trying to get your house ready for sale? Sometimes it takes more than a few cosmetic changes. While making the property look good is important, it is even more important that the house functions properly. The last thing a new homeowner wants to do is replace a faucet, or put in a new water heater shortly after the move. As you are repairing, updating or replacing, start up a notebook filled with notes for the new homeowner, letting them know about new fixtures. In some cases it may help to provide knowledge about warranties and service contracts, especially if they carry forward. Instead of trial and error, a new homeowner will appreciate a little good advice from the party who had the fixture replaced. Install a new toilet, rain sensors and water efficient nozzles to the sprinkler system, or solar panels for energy efficiency. Right now there are rebates in place through a variety of sources that can help you save money on installation, and improve the efficiency of your home in the ...

Why Hiring A Professioanl Plumber is Important.. CALL KING 303-949-5293

Owning your own home is probably the largest, long-term financial investment you’ll ever make. When times are good, its easy to hire people to help you maintain your home. But when the economy tightens, the purse strings begin to tighten as well, making some homeowners try more do-it-yourself repairs instead of hiring professional contractors to complete repair work. While some repair jobs are perfectly safe in the hands of an ambitious homeowner, others are still best left to the professionals. Plumbing involves two separate pieces: the hardware you can see and is easily visible, and the hardware that’s not. It’s easy to see your bathroom faucet dripping, but what isn’t easy to see is where the problem lies. What a homeowner sees as a small leak pooling around the base of a faucet may actually be a symptom of a much larger problem. The majority of plumbing hardware is placed within walls or floors. Not only are such pieces inaccessible to the average homeowner, but a DIY repair job co...
